Former speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar laid to rest in parliament grounds

The president and prime minister pay floral tributes before the BNP stalwart is buried

Former speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar has been laid to rest at the southwest corner of the parliament complex after his funeral prayers.

The funeral prayer for the five-time lawmaker was held after Asr in the parliament tunnel after bad weather forced a venue change from the South Plaza. 

Floral tributes followed.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin was represented by Military Secretary Major General ASM Bahuddin. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad and senior BNP leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Gayeswar Chandra Roy, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed, also paid their respects.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin described Sircar as a devoted public servant and said his death had deeply saddened parliamentarians.

The 94-year-old died early Sunday at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital. 

A constitutional lawyer, he served as speaker from 2001 to 2009 and as acting president in 2002.
