Police have arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Pallabi Police Station with 5,310 yaba pills for alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

ASI Md Shafiqul Islam, 43, and another man, known only as Wasim, 24, were arrested during overnight raids at Uttara’s Azampur.

Dakshinkhan Police chief Md Foyem Uddin confirmed the arrests to bdnews24.com.

He said police spotted Wasim trying to flee during a raid at Azampur Kachabazar and recovered 50 yaba pills from him.

Acting on his information, police raided a rented house and arrested Shafiqul with 200 yaba pills.

A subsequent raid on a flat at Noor Building in Bismillah Palli recovered another 5,110 pills, taking the total seizure to 5,310.

Investigating officer SI Shahinur Rahman said a case was filed under the Narcotics Control Act on Monday. Two to three unidentified people were also named.

A court later sent the two to jail.

The case statement says the suspects admitted during preliminary questioning that they brought yaba from different parts of the country and sold it in Dakshinkhan and surrounding areas.

Pallabi Police chief Hasan Bashir said Shafiqul joined the station about two months ago but had not performed duties there.

“We reported him absent to the station in June. He is not a good person,” he said.
