The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) says it has arrested “notorious criminal” Monir Hossain aka “Roktochosha Jony” (“Bloodthirsty Jony”) from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur with makeshift weapons.
He was arrested on Thursday night, according to Shamsul Islam, additional superintendent of police for RAB-2.
“Jony and his group have been carrying out extortion, beatings, criminal activities and weapons training in different parts of Mohammadpur for a long time through intimidation. There are multiple cases against Jony.”
The RAB official said that a press conference will be held at the RAB-2 Bosila office on Friday afternoon to present further details.
In September 2023, police arrested Jony with a pistol, five rounds of bullets and 300 grams of heroin.
At the time, Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Azimul Haque said there were 14 cases against Jony on various charges, including extortion, terrorism, and robbery.
Following the changeover of power, Jony’s name came up again in connection with several murders, kidnappings and extortion incidents in the Mohammadpur area. It is alleged that he had been carrying out these crimes through his accomplices for a long time while avoiding arrest.
