Dhaka University Chhatra Dal Senior Joint Secretary Nasir Uddin Shawon has been granted bail in a kidnapping and extortion case with the plaintiff’s consent.
A Dhaka court issued the order on Saturday, allowing Shawon to be released on a Tk 500 bond, while two other suspects, Mohammad Helal Uddin and Mohammad Idris, were remanded in custody.
The hearing was conducted by Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajur Rahman. Prosecution Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain provided the court with details.
The case was filed on Friday with Gulshan Police by Sheikh Naim Ahmed, owner of Tripzyan Travel Agency, alleging that Shawon and his associates abducted and extorted him.
According to the complaint, Naim went to Gulshan-1 on Thursday at 1pm for a business meeting, and later dined at a restaurant. Around 5:45pm, Shawon called to discuss buying a Dubai ticket. 10 minutes later, Shawon arrived with eight to 10 others and allegedly abducted Naim.
It says the abductors took Naim’s phone, laptop, and wallet, demanding Tk 3.75 million ransom. When he refused, they allegedly beat and verbally abused him near the lake, threatening to kill him by 10pm.
Naim reportedly called his family to pay the ransom. Despite delays, he was released around midnight on a motorcycle, with Shawon and others fleeing the scene when police arrived near Hatirjheel.
Following the case, Idris was arrested on Friday and given a one-day remand. Shawon and Helal were also detained the same day. Investigating officer SI Harunur Rashid requested remand for all three when presenting them in court on Saturday.
Shawon’s lawyer Zainul Abedin Palash sought bail, citing the plaintiff’s willingness to provide a sworn statement supporting Shawon’s release.
The court granted Shawon bail until submission of the investigation report but denied bail for the other two suspects, sending them to jail.
