Man beaten over child rape allegation in Fatullah dies in hospital

“If the family of the deceased come to the police station after his burial to file a case, it will be accepted,” a police official says

A man who was beaten over allegations of child rape in Narayanganj’s Fatullah has died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

He passed away in the afternoon of Thursday, Eid day, at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to Inspector Anwar Hossain of Fatullah Model Police Station.

The deceased was identified by a single name as Hiru, 21, a resident of Narayanganj Sadar Upazila.

On May 22, Hiru was alleged to have raped a 6-year-old girl. That night, locals detained and beat him, injuring him critically.

He was rescued as he was dying and admitted to the ICU of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, police said.

The next day, the mother of the alleged rape victim, filed a case with Fatullah Model Police Station naming Hiru as the prime suspect and his friend and local resident Md Sohel as an accomplice.

Following Hiru's death, Inspector Anwar said he had been receiving treatment under police guard under the supervision of Shahbagh Police Station. An autopsy has been completed on his body.

Stating that a case will be filed over the incident, the police officer said: "If the family of the deceased come to the police station after his burial to file a case, it will be accepted. It will be a murder case."
