Rivers may continue swelling for three more days

Coastal rivers in Barishal, Khulna and Chattogram may see higher-than-normal tides

Heavy rainfall may cause river levels to keep rising across Bangladesh for three more days, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

The swelling waters have raised the risk of flooding in six districts.

In its regular bulletin on Friday, the centre warned that low-lying areas along the Muhuri River in Feni may face flooding within the next 24 hours.

Over the next three days, the lowlands of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and Netrokona may also be inundated.

In the next 24 hours, rivers in the Chattogram Division, including Gomti, Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Sangu, and Matamuhuri, are expected to rise.

The Muhuri River could exceed the danger level, while the Matamuhuri River is likely to flow near the warning threshold.

These rivers may stabilise after 24 hours, with water levels expected to start falling from the third day onward.

In the Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, rivers such as the Sari-Goyain, Jadukata, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai, and Someshwari may continue to rise for three days, with a risk of crossing danger levels.

The Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the Rangpur Division are also expected to rise, with the Teesta possibly flowing near the danger mark in the coming three days.

Coastal rivers in Barishal, Khulna, and Chattogram may experience higher-than-normal tides in the next 24 hours.

While water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are rising, they are likely to remain below danger levels for the next three days.

The Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers are currently stable and flowing below danger levels.

This trend is expected to continue for the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual increase over four days, although still staying below danger thresholds.

The Ganges remains steady, but the Padma is rising. Both rivers may continue to swell for the next five days while staying below danger levels.

A low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday intensified into a well-marked low, which by 6am Thursday evolved into a depression, later deepening into a deep depression.

It brought widespread rainfall throughout Thursday and turned back into a depression by nightfall.

Due to its impact, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in many parts of the Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions on Friday.
