A police vehicle has been torched and vandalised in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila ahead of the National Citizen Party (NCP) central July procession programme.

Police have blamed the Bangladesh Chhatra League for the incident.

The incident occurred in Gopalganj Sadar’s Ulpur area on Wednesday morning, said Mir Md Sajedur Rahman, chief of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila.

The NCP has been conducting a “July Procession to Build a Country” since the first day of July. The party has conducted programmes in several districts across the country.

They were scheduled to conduct a procession in Gopalganj around 11am as part of the month-long programme. The police vehicle was set on fire before the programme started.

OC Sajedur said, “As part of the July procession, the central leaders of the National Citizen Party are scheduled to arrive at the municipal park in Gopalganj town.”

“Supporters of Ataur Rahman Piyal, the general secretary of the district unit of the banned Chhatra League, set fire to a police vehicle and vandalised it to disrupt the march. Police rushed to the spot after the incident was reported.”

No casualties have been reported, the police official said.
