The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata has opened a 24-hour helpline following the deadly hotel fire in the city’s New Market area.

The mission said in a notice on Wednesday that the hotline would provide emergency assistance to Bangladeshi nationals and help families in Bangladesh seeking information about relatives affected by the fire.

Those seeking assistance can contact Md Omar Faruk Akand, second secretary (political) at the Deputy High Commission.

He can be reached by mobile phone at +91 8274821352 or via WhatsApp at +8801717291266 and +91 9903426119.

The fire broke out around 2am at a hotel on Free School Street, also known as Mirza Ghalib Street, near New Market, one of Kolkata’s busiest areas.

Nine people, including a child, were killed in the blaze, while around 60 people were rescued from the building.

Bangladesh’s foreign ministry has confirmed that five of the dead were Bangladeshi nationals and said three other victims are also feared to be Bangladeshis.

Four of the five confirmed Bangladeshi victims were members of the same family, according to the ministry.

Six Bangladeshi nationals were also injured in the fire but were released after receiving first aid.
