A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam in a case over the murder of a seventh-grader during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Faiz passed the order on Tuesday, according to Riyaz Hossain, a bench assistant of the court.
Advocate Md Shohag Hasan argued for Atiqul during the hearing.
According to the case details, Rakib Hasan, who was a student at ITZ School and College in Mohammadpur, was shot in front of St Joseph Higher Secondary School on Jul 19, 2024.
He succumbed to his injuries later that night while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
On Sept 22 last year, Rakib’s uncle Nurul Amin filed a murder case naming ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina among 87 suspects.
Atiqul is ninth suspect in the first information report (FIR).
