Police have arrested the key suspect over the brutal stabbing of an eighth-grade schoolgirl outside her home in Rayerbazar.
The suspect, identified only as Siam, was arrested on Thursday morning at Kalabagan, said Dhanmondi Zone Assistant Commissioner Shah Mostafa Tarikuzzaman.
“An FIR has been filed, and the sole suspect, Siam, has been taken into custody. A detailed briefing will follow at a press conference this afternoon,” he said.
Preliminary investigations indicate the killing stemmed from a “love-related dispute”.
The killing of the schoolgirl Shahriar Sharmin Binti, 14, took place around 9pm on Wednesday.
Relatives rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 10:15pm, where doctors declared she was dead.
Her father Bellal Hossain said she had gone out with her younger brother, known only as Nabil.
Moments later, he heard commotion and found her with knife wounds. She was first taken to Zainul Haque Sikder Women's Medical College & Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police said Binti had multiple injuries on her back and shoulders. The family lives on the fifth floor of a five-storey building near Haydar Hotel in Rayerbazar.
Her mother, identified only as Nadia, claimed Siam attacked Binti and fled immediately after.
