A Dhaka court has sought an explanation from two Bhatara Police officers over a request to show former major Md Sadikul Haque arrested in a car-burning case while he was reportedly in jail.
During Monday’s hearing, Sadikul’s lawyer told the court he was behind bars when the incident occurred about a year ago.
The court then questioned how he could have been involved from jail.
Bhatara Police chief Mazharul Islam and Sub-Inspector Md Chand Ali, the investigating officer, must explain the matter by Aug 16, when the case will be heard again, prosecution Sub-Inspector (SI) Kamal Hossain said.
Chand Ali sought the arrest order on Aug 7 in connection with a Nov 11, 2025 case over a private car being set ablaze in Bashundhara.
According to the case documents, a man named Monir Hossain left his car near Bhatara Police Station’s Bitumen Gate before going home.
Later, police and firefighters put out the blaze after being alerted.
After learning about an Awami League-led “complete shutdown” programme scheduled for Nov 13, Monir filed an anti-terrorism case, accusing 20-25 unnamed people and alleging involvement by Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League members.
The investigator said the arson was part of the shutdown and intended to destabilise the country, claiming Sadikul had “direct and indirect involvement”.
Dismissed from the army, Sadikul was sentenced to three months in jail by a military court on Oct 29, 2024.
He was later shown arrested in another anti-terrorism case and has remained behind bars since.
