Activists from the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party (NCP) have clashed at the Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Parishad premises over bidding for lease of a ferry pier.
Several people from the opposing sides were injured in the skirmish, which centred on the leasing rights for the Boktaboli ferry pier.
Witnesses said Monday was the scheduled date for submitting tenders for the pier.
Interest in the lease drew large gatherings of followers from all three parties to the Upazila Parishad from early morning.
The tension boiled over around 1pm when BNP activists allegedly blocked Jamaat and NCP members from entering to submit their documents.
A second round of scuffles broke out at 2:30pm, escalating into a three-way clash before police intervened to disperse the crowd.
NCP leader Tauhidul Islam, who was injured in the incident, claimed that BNP activists had been obstructing them since the morning.
"When we protested, they beat us. Both I and Jamaat leader Abu Bakkar were assaulted. When our workers heard about the attack and gathered at the Upazila, the BNP men provoked another fight," he said.
Abu Bakkar, the local Jamaat leader, corroborated the account, saying he was attacked while trying to protect Touhid.
He identified several local BNP and Jubo Dal leaders as the attackers and noted that his associates were ultimately unable to submit their tender due to the violence.
Responding to the allegations, Fatullah Thana BNP President Shahidul Islam Titu described the event as "unexpected".
"I had been in discussions with Jamaat and NCP leaders since last night to reach a consensus so that we could do business collectively without trouble," Titu said.
"It is unfortunate that it didn’t work out. This could have been settled amicably."
Narayanganj Sadar Upazila administrator SM Foyez Uddin downplayed the severity of the violence.
He maintained that no major clash had occurred and claimed the tender process was completed "fairly and smoothly".
