The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has foiled an alleged attempt by India's Border Security Force (BSF) to push five people, including a woman, into Bangladesh through Meherpur.
The attempt was made through the Dhala border in Gangni at dawn on Friday, taking advantage of light rain that continued throughout the night, said Lt Col Rashed Kamal Rony, commanding officer of BGB's Kushtia 47 Battalion.
He said the alleged push-in attempt took place through the Dhala fields, around 150 yards inside Indian territory from Sub-Pillar 3 of Border Pillar 133, within the area under the jurisdiction of the Dhala BOP.
According to him, members of the BSF's 11 Battalion tried to force four men and one woman into Bangladesh illegally.
However, BGB personnel detected the move and immediately prevented it, forcing the attempt to fail.
Local residents said the five people whom the BSF allegedly tried to push into Bangladesh are currently staying near the barbed-wire fence.
They also said the BSF had allegedly attempted similar push-ins through different border points across the district throughout Thursday, taking advantage of the rain.
Villagers joined the BGB in mounting a mass resistance, remaining on alert alongside border guards despite the rain throughout the day and night.
Dhala Camp Commander Nayek Subedar Nizam Uddin Sikder said, "The BGB remains on high alert along the border. We will not allow any illegal push-in under any circumstances."
