A Sunamganj court has sent a young man, who identified himself as a “July activist”, and his associate to jail after locals detained and assaulted them for reportedly possessing nearly 1,000 yaba pills in the district’s Tahirpur Upazila.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mokhlesur Rahman of Badaghat police outpost said the youth named Nazmul Hasan Himel and his associate Sohagh Ahmed were nabbed in the bordering Laurergarh village on Wednesday night and then “beaten severely”.
Hailing from the district’s Bishwambarpur Upazila, both were later handed over to police.
Witness and former Union Council member Mustafa Miah said locals found 950 yaba pills in Himel’s possession. “He had been smuggling yaba pills from India and selling them across Bangladesh.”
ASI Mokhlesur said there are allegations against Himel of drug dealing under the banner of an “anti-narcotics organisation".
