Additional Commissioner Md Sarwar has been tasked with leading the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) until a permanent successor is formally appointed.
The directive from the Police Headquarters comes just one day after the resignation of the previous chief SM Sazzat Ali.
Sarwar currently holds the rank of supernumerary additional inspector general of police (IGP).
His predecessor Sazzat stepped down from the role on Wednesday, citing "personal and family reasons" in the resignation letter submitted to the Police Headquarters.
A member of the 1984 BCS Police cadre, Sarwar was dismissed from service in November 2016 while serving as an additional IGP during the Awami League government’s tenure.
Following the collapse of the Awami League administration in the 2024 uprising, the interim government retrospectively reinstated him to the force.
He was appointed the 38th police commissioner of Dhaka on Nov 20, 2024.
The decision to appoint Sarwar as the interim DMP chief was made by the newly appointed IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir, who took command of the force on Wednesday.
