Two sides have engaged in a clash at night in Madaripur using torches over a power struggle in the area. Over 100 crude bombs were detonated amid the violence.
The four-hour clash occurred in the municipality’s “New Madaripur” area from 9pm to 1am, according to Madaripur Sadar Police Station chief (OC) Abul Kalam Azad.
Video footage of several crude bomb explosions have gone viral on Facebook. Once the incident was reported, police went to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Police and witnesses say Moniruzzaman Hawlader Akhter, former councilor of Ward No. 2 of Madaripur Municipality, and his brother Liton Hawlader, and Hasan Munshi, brother of the deceased Shakil Munshi, president of a faction of the Madaripur Sadar Upazila Sramik Dal, and his supporters in the Alamin Chowkidar group, are involved in a dispute over dominance in the area. Due to the dispute, the two sides often clash.
It was learned from talking to locals that Liton, general secretary of a faction of the Madaripur Municipality Awami League, and Jubo League activist, was made the president of the Madaripur Municipality Sramik Dal in February 2025.
Moniruzzaman and Liton then clashed with Shakil over the formation of the committee.
In addition, Akhter had a dispute with the family of Rubel Hawlader in the same area over his expanding influence.
Awami League leader Moniruzzaman was in prison for an extended period in connection with a murder case connected to the July Uprising.
On the day of his bail hearing on Mar 23, 2025, his supporters had expected his release and gathered to welcome him at the court premises. This sparked tension in the area.
That afternoon, there were clashes between people on Shakil's side and Moniruzzaman's supporters, including chases and counter-chases. The situation calmed down when police went to the scene in the afternoon.
That night Shakil was attacked and hacked by sharp weapons, later dying of his wounds.
Locals rescued Shakil and admitted him to Madaripur Sadar Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Later, the family of the victim claimed that Liton, Alamin Hawlader, Jahangir Hawlader and others carried out the attack.

Regarding Sunday night's clash, OC Azad said: "Preparations are under way to take legal action on the matter. Additional police personnel have been deployed as the situation in the area is tense."
He said the two sides often clash over dominance in the area.
