Detective police have arrested Naimur Rahman Durjoy, former Manikganj-1 MP and ex-captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team.
On Wednesday, Manikganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Yasmin Khatun said that a team from Manikganj Detective Branch (DB) arrested Durjoy in Dhaka’s Lalmatia.
She added that Durjoy faces two separate cases filed at two police stations in Manikganj district.
Since the government change following the student-led mass uprising, many former Awami League MPs and ministers have been arrested.
Durjoy, who captained Bangladesh in their first-ever Test match against India at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in 2000, later moved into politics with the Awami League but has kept a low profile since the regime change.
He entered parliament in 2014, secured a second term, but was denied nomination in 2024.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on Aug 5 last year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lodged corruption charges against Durjoy.
On Sept 26, 2024, the ACC summoned bank records of Durjoy and his wife Farhana Rahman.
On Oct 3, a Dhaka court imposed a travel ban on the couple.
The national anti-graft agency later initiated another case on Dec 18 against him for acquiring “illegal assets”.
