Authorities have urged people living on hills and at their foothills in landslide-prone areas of Chattogram to move to safer shelters as days of heavy rainfall continue to trigger landslides.
The appeal came after a 12-year-old girl, identified only as Samia, was killed in a landslide at Babu Colony in Chashma Hill on Wednesday.
Chattogram City Mayor Sahadat Hossain made the call while visiting the site after the incident.
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia issued the same appeal while inspecting a waterlogged section of the railway line in Shamsher Para of Sholoshahar.
The port city has been experiencing extremely heavy rainfall for a fourth consecutive day.
After recording 412mm of rain in the 24 hours until 3pm on Tuesday, widespread waterlogging was reported across the city.
In the following 24 hours until 3pm on Wednesday, the Patenga Met Office recorded another 179.4mm of rainfall.
That brought the total rainfall over the past 48 hours to 591mm.
