Dhaka Customs House has seized gold bars worth approximately Tk 200 million from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, the agency said a consignment of 80 gold bars was seized on Wednesday night after being found unattended.
According to the statement, around 8:45pm on Wednesday, customs officials received confidential information that gold was being smuggled on a Flydubai flight (FZ-523) arriving at Shahjalal Airport.
Customs House officials immediately went to the aircraft to conduct a search. According to the agency, the aircraft was found empty of passengers at the time.
Later, in the presence of officials from various intelligence agencies, a search of the aircraft was conducted. During the search, some objects wrapped in black Scotch tape were found underneath seat 19A.
The items were then taken to the customs hall and opened, revealing 80 gold bars. Each bar weighed 116.64 grams, with the total weight of the bars amounting to 9,331 grams.
According to the Customs House, the gold bars had been brought into the country illegally by evading government-imposed customs duties and taxes. The agency said there was a possibility that the gold could subsequently have been smuggled out of the airport premises.
The seized gold bars have been deposited in the airport customs warehouse. The agency said the process of depositing the gold bars with Bangladesh Bank as precious metals is under way in accordance with the standing order governing the disposal of uncleared goods and goods seized or confiscated on charges of smuggling.
A criminal case has also been filed with the Airport Police Station in connection with the incident.
