A man named Fakir Alamgir has been killed in a fight stemming from a dispute over sweeping a shop at the Sayedabad Bus Terminal in Jatrabari, Dhaka.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning in front of the office of the terminal’s bus owners’ association office.

Alamgir hailed from Aliganj in Hajiganj Upazila of Chandpur. He lived with his family in the Karatitola area of Sayedabad in Dhaka. At night, he worked as an assistant on a newspaper delivery vehicle. During the day, he sold sherbet from a van and also helped at his wife’s Khichuri and Roti shop. The couple have four children.

Jatrabari Police Station chief Mohammad Raju said a case had been filed over the incident. Three people have been shown as arrested in the case and sent to court.

Sub-Inspector Atanu Dey Prem said, “The argument between the two sides began over a trivial matter. At one point, the squabble turned into a fight. We have initially learned that the man fell onto the road and died during the incident.”

He said Alamgir’s body had been kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital to determine the actual cause of death. “The incident is being investigated in detail, and legal proceedings are under way,” he added.

Alamgir’s younger brother, Shukkur, alleged that the dispute began over a disagreement between his brother and sister-in-law and a sweeper named Shukkur Ali.

He said, “Shukkur Ali used to sweep nearby shops and collect money for it. He also wanted to sweep my sister-in-law’s shop and demanded payment. But my brother and sister-in-law said they would sweep their own shop themselves. This led to an argument between them.”

According to Alamgir’s brother, at one point Shukkur Ali hit his sister-in-law. When Alamgir protested, a scuffle broke out between the two men. During the altercation, Shukkur Ali allegedly punched his brother repeatedly in the chest. Alamgir then fell onto the road and hit his head on a piece of brick.

Later, with the help of local residents, Alamgir was taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, his brother said.
