The Justice and Democracy Party (JDP) has called for actress Meher Afroz Shaon to be taken into police custody, accusing her of engaging in activities against the July Uprising.

The group also called on the government to take action over what it describes as “anti-Uprising activities”.

At a press conference at Madhur Canteen on the University of Dhaka campus on Thursday, JDP Convenor Nayeem Ahmed made the demand.

He alleged that Shaon was trying to create disorder and undermine the unity built around the July Uprising, urging law-enforcing agencies to take her into custody and arrange psychiatric treatment.

Nayeem also said Shaon should be prevented from making public statements until she pledged support for the Uprising or stopped activities opposing it.

Turning to independent MP Rumin Farhana, he alleged that her public association with Shaon could damage her popularity if she did not distance herself from what he described as “anti-Uprising forces”.

He also urged the government to act against such activities, warning that "the people" would do so if it failed to intervene.

Referring again to Shaon, Nayeem alleged that she had returned to Bangladesh under the current government's tenure with the support of individuals inside the administration.

He further alleged that there could be people within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting on behalf of New Delhi who had helped facilitate her return.

The convenor called on BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman to launch an internal purge, claiming the party should remove those he described as "Delhi loyalists".

He warned that failing to reorganise the party without such individuals would make it difficult for Tarique to govern successfully in future.

Commenting on the verdict in the crimes against humanity case involving Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) President Hasanul Haq Inu, Nayeem said the sentence was “inadequate”.

He argued that a 10-year prison term did not reflect Inu's alleged role in supporting the previous Awami League government and said his organisation was dissatisfied with the ruling.

While saying they did not want to influence the courts, he also argued that the current generation would not accept arbitrary judgments.

Nayeem also called for the cancellation of the registration of 13 political parties, including the Workers Party of Bangladesh and JaSaD, both former allies of the Awami League.

JDP Chief Organiser Ahsan Ullah and Member Secretary Abdul Alim were also present at the press conference.
