Ex-Bangladesh Bank deputy governor SK Sur gets 3-year jail term

The conviction comes over his failure to submit a wealth statement to the ACC

Former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Sitangshu Kumar Sur, also known as SK Sur Chowdhury, has been sentenced to three years in prison in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over his failure to submit a wealth statement.

Judge Ayesha Nasrin of Dhaka Special Judges’ Court-2 handed down the verdict on Tuesday, ACC prosecutor Abul Kalam Azad said.

Sur was produced before the court from jail on the day, and sent back to prison with a conviction warrant after the verdict.

The ACC arrested the former central bank official in the capital's Segunbagicha on Jan 14, and he has remained in jail since.

According to the case documents, the national anti-graft agency served Sur with a notice requiring him to submit a detailed statement of all movable and immovable assets, liabilities, sources of income and acquisition details for himself and his dependants over allegations of possessing wealth beyond known sources of income.

He collected the wealth statement form along with the order to submit it, signing for it himself on Oct 27 last year, but failed to file the statement within the stipulated 21 working days.

The case was filed against Sur, his wife Suparna Sur Chowdhury and daughter Nandita Sur Chowdhury on Dec 23, 2024.

The court framed charges on Nov 6 last year after the chargesheet was submitted on Aug 23, paving the way for the trial.

Seven witnesses testified before Tuesday's verdict.
