A former local Chhatra Dal leader has been hacked to death in Bogura in an attack police believe stemmed from a longstanding personal feud.
The victim, Atikur Rahman Sagar Mondal, 26, a former convenor of the Shakharia Union unit of Chhatra Dal, was attacked about 2:30am at Sadar Upazila’s Chalitabari, police said.
Police have taken a woman into custody for questioning in connection with the killing, said Inspector (Investigation) Mahfuz Alam of Bogura Sadar Police Station.
According to the victim's family, Sagar had been involved in a prolonged dispute with neighbours.
They said he was standing in the courtyard of his home while family members were eating inside when a group of 20 to 25 people, allegedly led by his cousin Julhas, broke through the property's tin gate and attacked him with sharp weapons.
His wife Marzia Khatun said the attackers continued to chase him after he tried to flee before he collapsed on a nearby road.
She said the group also threatened her when she screamed for help and later followed family members as they attempted to take him to hospital.
Sagar was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said efforts were under way to identify and arrest those behind the killing.
Officer Mahfuz said preliminary findings suggested the attack stemmed from previous enmity.
He added that Sagar had six criminal cases filed against him involving allegations including assault, drugs and illegal weapons.
