In a shocking turn of incidents, four people, including a father and his son, have died after entering an abandoned well in Tangail’s Madhupur Upazila.

A bid to save a child who descended into the well to retrieve a goat ended in the deaths.

The incident occurred around 8:30am at Teliki Joloi area on Saturday, Madhupur Police chief AKM Fazlul Haque said.

The dead were identified as Babul Hadima, 48; his son Neymar Mrong, 10; Ratan Nokrek, 24; and Gabriel Nokrek, 32. All were members of an ethnic minority community.

According to police, citing local residents, a goat kid fell into the abandoned well in the morning.

Neymar reportedly climbed down to retrieve the animal but stopped responding after entering the well.

Madhupur Fire Service Sub-Officer Lavlu Torofdar said the abandoned well was approximately 9 to 10ft deep.

“A child first entered the pit to retrieve the goat and died from a lack of oxygen. Later, three others, including family members, went down one by one to rescue the child and also died,” he said.

Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel recovered the bodies and handed them over to police, he added.

Officer Fazlul confirmed the other two victims were relatives of the family.

The bodies will be handed over to the victims’ families after completion of legal formalities, the officer said.
