Detectives have arrested Akhtaruzzaman, a former Gazipur-5 MP and DUCSU vice-president of the 1980s, on charges of involvement in activities of a banned organisation.

In a media statement on Wednesday night, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said Akhtaruzzaman was arrested around 10pm during a raid on a house in Gulshan.

“He was arrested over allegations of involvement in activities of a banned organisation. Several cases, including murder, have been filed against him,” the statement said.

A former Awami League organising secretary, Akhtaruzzaman was elected DUCSU general secretary twice, in 1979 and 1980, with Mahmudur Rahman Manna as vice-president.

He became vice-president in 1981, with Ziauddin Bablu as general secretary.

In the Jan 8, 2024 election, Akhtaruzzaman won Gazipur-5 as an independent candidate, defeating Awami League’s Meher Afroz Chumki.
