Borhan Uddin, who went missing before the mob lynching of a mother and her two children in Cumilla’s Muradnagar, has still not returned home.
Police, however, said he was in Dhaka.
The young man is the son of Jashim Uddin from Koroibari under Bangra Bazar Police Station. Since Jul 1, he has been unseen in public after being beaten over charges of stealing a mobile phone.
The next day, on Jul 2, his father filed a police complaint, seeking help to find his son.
Bangra Bazar police chief Mahfuzur Rahman said, “We have spoken to Borhan over the phone. He is in Dhaka. His father is currently in Cumilla.”
However, no family members were found in Borhan's house during a visit.
His younger sister Amrin Akhter, a resident of a nearby area, said she has had no contact with her father and brother for several days.
“I don’t know where they are. Only our grandparents are at home.”
According to the complaint filed by Jashim, local union council member Bachchu Mia called him on Jul 1 and informed that Borhan was beaten over a mobile theft allegation by Rabiul Awal, Md Bashir Mia, Md Jilani, and eight to ten unidentified others. They also demanded a fine of Tk 100,000.
When Borhan expressed his inability to pay the fine, he was taken to an unknown location. Jashim requested police to take legal action in this regard.
Meanwhile, on Jul 4, Roksana Begum alias Rubi, 53, her children Rasel Mia, 35, and Taspiya Akhter alias Jonaki, 29, were beaten to death by a mob in Koroibari over allegations of involvement in drug-related activities.
The situation in the area has remained tense since the incident.
Following the triple murder, Rubi’s daughter Rikta Akhter initiated a case against 38 people and up to 25 unidentified individuals.
She said, “When Borhan was being beaten, his father Jashim approached my mother for help. As she went to intervene, the conflict broke out.”
Jonaki’s husband Alamgir Hossain Monir said, “We don’t know where Borhan is. Since the incident, there’s been no trace of them. Maybe they’re not returning home out of fear, because not all of the accused in the murder case have been arrested yet.”
The people accused in Jashim’s missing report are the same individuals who have been named in the murder case of Rubi and her children.
