Two autorickshaw passengers have died after a dump truck crashed head-on into their three-wheeler in Gazipur’s Kaliganj Upazila.
Three others were injured in the accident that occurred around 8:30am on Friday at Deopara on the Tongi-Dhorashal Bypass Road, according to Sub-Inspector Maksudul Kabir Nakib of Kaliganj Police Station.
One of the dead has been identified as 40-year-old Oli Ullah of Sukandi village in Narsingdi’s Monohardi Upazila, police said. The other was about 35 years old, but their identity has yet to be confirmed immediately.
The injured are Hafizur Rahman, 40, his wife Salma Begum, 35, and Tamim, 4, from Sirajganj.
Police and locals say the passengers were travelling from Gazipur's Safipur to Narsingdi via Kaliganj in an autorickshaw. On the way, a dump truck coming from the opposite direction ploughed into the autorickshaw, killing two people on the spot.
Three people were then rushed to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition.
They were given first aid there and sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
SI Maksudul Kabir said efforts are under way to uncover further details about the dead.
