Jinat, the “shooter” arrested over the murder of Jatiotabadi Swecchasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Muchabbir, has “confessed” to his involvement in court.

The court ordered three other suspects to be interrogated in custody for seven days each in connection with the killing.

On Monday, the investigating officer, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Aminul Islam of the Tejgaon Zone, produced four arrestees in the case before the court.

As Jinat agreed to make a confessional statement, the investigator sought its recording and also prayed to interrogate the remaining three suspects in custody.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque recorded Jinat’s statement and later sent him to jail.

In a separate hearing, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam granted seven days in custody for the other three suspects.

The three are Abdul Qadir, Billal Hossain, and Riaz, identified with a single name. Qadir and Billal are brothers.

According to police, Billal was the “main coordinator” of the murder, while Qadir helped the suspects escape after the incident.

Riaz allegedly carried out reconnaissance at the scene beforehand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi told the court that the main shooter, identified only as Rahim, is still at large.

“Rahim, along with Billal and Qadir, took part in the murder. They need to be interrogated. We are seeking the maximum time to interrogate them in custody,” he said.

When asked by the court whether they had legal representation, the suspects replied that they did not.

The magistrate then questioned Billal and Qadir about Rahim’s whereabouts. The brothers said they did not know where he was and claimed they were not involved in the crime.

After hearing both sides, the court granted seven days to interrogate each of the three suspects.

Shortly after 8pm on Wednesday, unidentified gunmen opened fire on Muchabbir in the alley of the Ahsanullah Institute of Technical and Vocational Education and Training, adjacent to Hotel Superstar on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue.

Abu Sufian Bepari Masud, general secretary of the Van Workers’ Union under Tejgaon Thana, also suffered bullet injuries in the drive-by shooting.

Both were taken to hospital immediately after the attack, where doctors declared Muchabbir dead.
