The government is going to establish an earthquake taskforce and a special earthquake preparedness cell at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to strengthen disaster readiness.
A Secretariat meeting led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman discussed plans to recruit, train and equip 100,000 volunteers to provide emergency services in Dhaka and surrounding areas after a major earthquake, Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Shadhin said on Wednesday.
The government has instructed authorities to strengthen post-earthquake emergency response and enhance overall preparedness, he added.
Officials at the meeting said a database of 70,000 volunteers had already been prepared, with the remaining 30,000 to be enlisted soon.
The meeting also reviewed measures to ensure effective coordination between government and private organisations during disasters.
Discussions also covered the establishment of a Human Staging Area (HSA) in Dhaka to support emergency response operations.
