A lightning strike killed a father in Rajbari, but his toddler daughter survives

“Suddenly, lightning struck, Sumon fell to the ground and his daughter was thrown from his arms,” police say

A man has been killed by a lightning strike in Rajbari Sadar Upazila.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Bagmara area of Mizanpur Union, according to Uttam Kumar Ghosh, chief of Rajbari Police Station.

The deceased, 35-year-old Sumon Ahmed, was a local resident.

Citing the family, police official Kumar said: “Sumon worked at a pharmaceutical company. Around 6:45am, he was headed to a store next to their house with his 3.5-year-old daughter Safia.”

“Suddenly, lightning struck, Sumon fell to the ground and his daughter was thrown from his arms. The family rescued him and took him to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital’s Emergency Department, where a doctor on duty declared him dead.”

Safia remains healthy after the incident, the police official said.

Police have been sent to the scene and legal action is under way, he added.
