Six people have died in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila and three others have been hospitalised after drinking “alcohol”, authorities say.

Five of the victims died on Saturday night and one on Sunday night, according to Chuadanga Sadar Police Station chief Khaledur Rahman.

“On Thursday night, a few people drank spirits in the Dingedah Bazar area of Shankar Chandra Union of the Sadar Upazila,” Khaledur said.

“After that, five people died one by one from Saturday. The incident came to light after another person died while undergoing treatment in a hospital on Sunday night.”

He added that the death toll could rise.

The deceased have been identified as Kheder Ali, 40, a van driver from Nafarkandi village; Mohammad Selim, 40, a fish trader from Khejura village; Mohammad Laltu alias Ripu, 30, a van driver from Pirojkhali village; Mohammad Shahid, 45, a worker from Shankarchandra village; Mohammad Samir, 55, a mill worker from Dingedah village; and Sardar Mohammad Laltu, 52, a worker from Asia Biscuit Factory area.

AKM Nasim Uz Zaman, a doctor on duty at the emergency department of Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, said that Laltu died while receiving treatment for “alcohol poisoning”.

His body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.

Jamal Al Naser, an additional superintendent of police in Chuadanga, said investigators had confirmed six deaths so far.

“We have initially learned that all of them died after consuming ‘poisonous liquor,’” he said.

“However, none of their families are admitting the matter.”

Four of the victims have already been buried. The bodies of two others were recovered and sent for autopsy, police said.

“Three more are under treatment in the hospital and are in a critical condition. We are investigating the matter further,” Naser added.
