Tarique inaugurates three-day Nazrul birth anniversary celebrations in Mymensingh’s Trishal

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has joined the inauguration of the celebrations marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in Mymensingh’s Trishal.

The three-day state-sponsored festival officially commenced at 3:30pm at the place where the poet spent parts of his childhood.

This is the first time Trishal is hosting the event since 2006.

"It is a matter of profound pride and joy for us that the 127th birth anniversary of our national poet, our soulful poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, is being celebrated right here in Trishal," said Syed Emran Saleh Prince, the administrator of the Mymensingh district council.

In 1914, a police officer named Rafiz Ullah brought a young Nazrul to the Kazir Shimla Village in Trishal from a bakery in Asansol, West Bengal.

During his initial stay, the teenage poet resided in a drawing room, bathed in a nearby pond, and roamed about the village.

Nazrul was enrolled in Class 7 at the Darirampur High School.

The school was located nearly 5km away from his residence, making commuting during the monsoon season difficult.

Lodging arrangements were made for him at the Bichutia Bepari residence in Namapara.

While studying there in Class 8, Nazrul abruptly left for Cumilla without explaining to anyone the reason for his move.

He never returned to Trishal again.

The government established two Nazrul Memorial Centres at Kazir Shimla Darogabari and Bichutia Beparibari.

Local residents note that both facilities currently suffer from severe neglect, driven by acute manpower shortages and infrastructural deficits.
