Government opens inquiry into ‘corruption’ against BSS MD Mahbub Morshed

A committee has until Feb 25 to submit a report

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has formed a four-strong committee to investigate corruption allegations against Mahbub Morshed, the managing director and chief editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).

The committee was constituted to ensure a transparent, and fair review of the corruption allegations raised in the media against Morshed, according to a media release issued on Thursday.

An additional secretary (Grade-1) of the ministry will lead the investigation.

The committee has been given until Feb 25 to submit a report.

Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, Morshed left the organisation’s headquarters in Purana Paltan following protests by journalists and staff.

A section of employees declared him “unwelcome” in the government-run news agency.

Morshed, who was appointed MD and chief editor by the interim government for a two-year term in August 2024 after the July Uprising, accused the staff of creating a “mob” to pressure his removal instead of following proper contractual procedures.

In a Facebook post, he wrote: “There are recognised procedures to cancel a contract or remove someone. Why create a mob, attack, and lock the office instead?”
