Advisor Farida Akhter does not view climate change as a ‘mere economic problem’

Speakers say Bangladesh faces the greatest threat despite minimal contribution to climate change

Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhter has commented there is no scope to describe climate change as a “mere economic problem”.

She wants climate justice to be in the discussion to ensure accountability.

She was speaking at a conference on climate justice at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University on Saturday, according to a media statement by the fisheries and livestock ministry.

“Climate justice means fairness, survival, and accountability,” she was quoted as saying in the statement.

Farida criticised continued fossil fuel reliance, noting significant gaps in implementing the commitments of the Paris Climate Agreement and other global accords.

She said the Global North often provides loans instead of justice.

Dhoritry Rokkhay Amra (DHORA), a non-government organisation, is organising the two-day conference.

Social Welfare Advisor Sharmeen S Murshid inaugurated the conference on Saturday.
