A man has been shot dead at a market in Raozan Upazila of Chattogram.
The victim, identified as Masudul Haque Chowdhury, was killed around 2pm on Saturday at Chowmuhani Bazar in Pahartali Union.
He was the son of Sadeq Chowdhury of Betagi in neighbouring Rangunia Upazila.
Local residents said Masudul was involved in politics with the Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal.
After the shooting, traffic on the Chattogram-Kaptai road came to a standstill as angry locals took to the street in protest.
Raozan Police chief Saiful Islam said Masudul had gone to the market to buy medicine when a group of men ambushed him, opened fire and fled.
Police are conducting drives to arrest those involved, he added.
Masudul's body was found at the scene with a gunshot wound to the head, locals said.
Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members later arrived at the spot.
Assistant Superintendent of Police for Rangunia Circle Md Belayat Hossain told journalists at the scene that he had found a man with a gunshot wound upon arrival and that an investigation was under way to identify those responsible.
Police are trying to bring the situation under control and restore traffic by speaking to locals.
Raozan has seen a number of killings over the past two years.
