The High Court has agreed to hear the appeals filed by former MP Shahrin Islam Chowdhury Tuhin, challenging his convictions in two corruption cases.
The bench of Justice Mohammad Ali and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali issued the orders on Tuesday, granting him bail until the appeals are disposed of.
Barrister Hasan Rajib Prodhan represented Tuhin in the hearing.
Earlier, on Apr 29, two trial courts in Dhaka rejected Tuhin’s bail petition subject to appeal, and ordered his imprisonment.
Tuhin, a former MP from the Nilphamari-1 constituency, is the son of Selina Islam, the elder sister of the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed two cases against Tuhin at Gulshan Police Station in 2007, during the military-backed caretaker government. One of the cases is for tax evasion, and the other is for amassing illegal wealth.
In the tax evasion case, a 2008 verdict sentenced him to a total of eight years’ rigorous imprisonment, three years under one Section and five under another.
However, the court ruled that the sentences would run simultaneously, meaning he would have to serve a maximum of five years.
In the illegal wealth case, he was sentenced in 2008 to 13 years’ rigorous imprisonment, three years under one section and 10 under another.
Tuhin had been in hiding since the cases began. He has now filed appeals and been granted bail, 17 years after the verdicts were delivered.
