A total of 19 people have been arrested in 15 cases filed over Durga Puja-related incidents across Bangladesh, according to Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam.
The police chief said 49 incidents were reported by Monday night during the festival.
Speaking at a press conference at Police Headquarters on Tuesday, Baharul outlined the nature of the disturbances. These included:
• Misleading posts on Facebook
• Water thrown inside a temple
• A Jamaat-e-Islami activist allegedly forcing a halt to music
• Incidents of extortion
• Attacks on Ansar personnel
• Vandalism of idols
About the Jamaat activist, Baharul said: “The arrestee has identified himself as a Jamaat member. The party said legal action will be taken against him.”
The incident occurred in the Kotwali area of Chattogram, he added.
He also said rumours are often spread on social media during religious festivals, undermining communal harmony.
“Sometimes old videos and incidents of idol vandalism are re-circulated on social media,” he said, adding that the cyber unit is working to dispel such confusion.
“Many are working to destroy communal harmony. We are vigilant in this regard.”
He also highlighted ensuring equal security at every Puja pandal.
