On Aug 26, police detectives conducted an investigation into suspicious activities by Chinese and Taiwanese nationals at a resort on Marine Drive in Cox's Bazar.
A three-member delegation from the Chinese embassy went to the scene that day.
Police say the embassy representatives visited the resort's computer lab, soundproof rooms and various areas used by foreign nationals. They verbally stated that the Chinese and Taiwanese nationals staying there were involved in fraud and online-based crimes.
Police then arrested six people from two hotels in Cox's Bazar on Thursday night. They were sent to jail through a court on Friday.
Police filed a case over the incident on Thursday night, naming 10 suspects. They also accused another 250 to 300 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals as unnamed suspects.
Police say that not only are the six arrestees part of the fraud ring, but also another 250 to 300 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals. However, law enforcers believe that some of them have left Cox’s Bazar.
How Chinese Nationals Lived at Resorts
Md Salim, an employee of the Marina Beach Villa Resort, told bdnews24.com that a group of foreigners came to their resort about three months ago.
“We were not allowed to enter the rooms they rented,” he said.
According to Salim, they also travelled in secret. They moved about in cars, getting in and out of the vehicles in such a way that their faces were not easily recognizable.
Abu Bakr, another employee of the resort, said that there were about 50 foreigners there and they rented about 45 rooms.
According to him, they would use their own people to do their daily shopping and also brought in Chinese nationals to cook.
“The movement of any Bangladeshi was completely prohibited,” said Abu Bakr.
ABS Mizan, owner of Hotel Orchid Blue in Marine Drive, said that a group of about 60 Chinese nationals were staying at his hotel. They rented 25 rooms in the hotel booked them for six months.
However, they left the hotel ahead of schedule on Aug 26. By then, their stay had extended for about four and a half months.
Mizan said that the foreign nationals had brought their own cooks to arrange their meals.
Meanwhile, the Dream Holiday Resort authorities on Marine Drive have also confirmed the presence of Chinese nationals at their hotel. However, the authorities refused to provide detailed information about their location, room bookings or other related matters.
Ramu Police Station chief AK Fazlul Haque said that, after news of the raid became public, the fraudsters may spread out to different parts of the country.
Claiming that the police are continuing to track them down, he said: “This is our matter and our work on it is ongoing.”
Asked whether more arrests could be made, he said the police are working with those involved in the incident and the crime.
