Police have recovered the hanging body of a private university student from a flat at Dhaka’s Bashundhara.
The victim, 27-year-old Mahmuda Akhtar Jerin, was a student of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB).
Jerin resided in a rented room in a house in Block C of the residential area. She hailed from Sonaimuri Upazila in Noakhali district.
Bhatara Police chief Md Emaul Haque said they found Jerin's room locked from the inside after residents of the building alerted the police on Wednesday night.
"Officers broke down the door and found her body hanging from the ceiling fan by a scarf," said Emaul.
The body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for a postmortem on Wednesday night. An unnatural death case has been filed with Bhatara Police Station.
While police suspect, citing the victim’s classmates, the student may have taken her own life due to depression, the officer noted that the exact cause of death will be confirmed following the postmortem report.
