Md Al Kamal Sheikh, arrested over the murder of Primeasia University student Zahidul Islam Parvez, has given a statement in court “confessing” to the crime.

The confession came while Kamal, 19, who is not a student of the university, was on remand.

On Wednesday, Banani Police Inspector AKM Moin Uddin brought him before a Dhaka court to record the statement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman recorded Kamal’s statement and ordered him to be sent to jail.

Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain from the prosecution wing of Banani Police Station confirmed the development.

Kamal, along with two others, was arrested by Banani police on Sunday midnight, the day after Parvez's murder.

The two other arrested individuals, Alvi Hossain Junayed, 19, and Al Amin Sani, 19, are also not students at Primeasia University, and their names are also absent from the chargesheet.

On Monday, the court granted a seven-day remand for the trio for interrogation.

Later that night, police arrested the fifth accused, Hridoy Miyazi, from his uncle’s house in Cumilla’s Titas.

On Wednesday, Meheraz Islam, the first accused, was arrested in Gaibandha while Mahathir Hasan, the third accused, was picked up in Chattogram.

A total of six suspects have now been arrested in connection with the case.

On Saturday afternoon, Parvez, a student of the 223rd batch of the Textile Engineering Department, was stabbed to death in a “knife attack” following a dispute between some students on the campus of the private Primeasia University in Banani.

Following the incident, Parvez’s cousin filed a case naming eight individuals, including two leaders of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

In addition, as many as 25 to 30 unnamed individuals were listed as accused.
