Activists of the “banned” Bangladesh Chhatra League have returned to Dhaka University campus, staging their first procession in one and a half years to demand the withdrawal of sanctions and nationwide cases against their members.
The march began around 8:30am on Sunday in front of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, near the TSC intersection.
Around 30 activists took part, concluding with a brief demonstration near the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture.
The Chhatra League later shared a video of the procession on its verified Facebook page, showing members shouting slogans including their trademark rallying cries, “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu”.
Participants expressed hopes for the “homecoming” of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, sentenced to death over crimes against humanity in attempts to suppress the July Uprising, while criticising collaborators of the 1971 Liberation War.
The student activists labelled the interim government’s ban and the ongoing cases against them as “false” and demanded that all lawsuits and sanctions be revoked.
They also called for justice for the policemen killed during the July Uprising.
The interim government had outlawed the Awami League’s student front on Oct 23, 2024, citing its alleged involvement in murder, torture, rape, and acts of terrorism -- particularly during the last 15 years of Sheikh Hasina’s administration until Aug 5, 2024.
