Deep depression intensifies over Bay, warning signal stays at 3

Heavy rain is likely across much of Bangladesh

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has increased the likelihood of gusty winds along Bangladesh's coast, while heavy rain is forecast across much of the country.

On Monday, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said the deep depression had formed after a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coast intensified.

It said the system could strengthen further and move north-northeast.

At 9am, the system was centred about 425km west-southwest of Chittagong Port, 430km west of Cox's Bazar, 20km west-southwest of Mongla and 260km west-southwest of Payra.

Maximum sustained wind speeds within 48km of the centre were around 50kmph, rising to 60kmph in gusts, leaving the sea rough near the system.

The Met Office has kept Local Warning Signal No. 3 hoisted at Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports.

All fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay have been advised to remain in safe shelter until further notice.

The regular morning bulletin said the deep depression could cross the West Bengal-north Odisha coast by Monday evening.

The monsoon remains active over Bangladesh and strong over the north Bay.

From 9am, most places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, along with some areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet, are likely to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds.

Isolated areas may see moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall.
