Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for a united effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, saying their implementation will be crucial to rebuilding Bangladesh.
On Monday, he spoke at a three-day national conference on a five-year strategic framework for achieving the SDGs at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre on Monday.
“No single ministry or department can implement the SDGs. It requires collective support from the government, private sector, development partners, NGOs, civil society, media and every citizen,” he said.
The prime minister also inaugurated a pilot “SDG Village” initiative in Mitingachhari in Rangamati’s Kaptai, Pankhali in Khulna’s Dakop, and Nafanagar in Dinajpur’s Bochaganj.
Residents of the three villages spoke to him online about the initiative and its expected benefits.
Under the pilot, programmes including family, health, and farmer cards, SME loans, school uniforms, madrasa education, renewable energy, village tourism, blue employment, tree planting, canal excavation, and ecotourism will be implemented together and their impact assessed.
The government plans to expand the model to other villages based on its success.
Tarique said Bangladesh had made significant progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and was similarly advancing towards the SDGs.
He said the government had adopted a “three-R” strategy -- “recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction” -- to consolidate progress towards LDC graduation and SDG implementation.
