Young man suspected of theft beaten to death by mob in Tongi

The suspect has reportedly died on spot

A young man has been beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of theft in Gazipur’s Tongi.

The incident took place near a pedestrian staircase on a flyover in the Station Road area around 7am on Wednesday, according to Zillur Rahman, an inspector from Tongi East Police Station.

Police believe the deceased was around 22 years old, but his identity has not yet been verified.

Witnesses said a mob grabbed the suspected thief and began beating him. He died on the spot.

Police recovered the body after being informed of the incident and sent it to the morgue for an autopsy.

"Police are working to identify the deceased. At the same time, an investigation is under way to identify those involved and determine the circumstances of the incident," Zillur said.

He added that a case has been filed in connection with the incident.
