A union level Awami League leader has been shot in Kushtia’s Mirpur.
He was shot near his own business in Sadarpur Bazar on Sunday evening, said Kushtia Assistant Police Commissioner (Mirpur Circle) Muhammad Mahmudul Haque Majumdar.
The injured Shafiqul Islam Azam, 40, hails from the Bil Amla area of Mirpur Upazila.
Shafiqul serves as the general secretary of Amla Union Awami League and is a tobacco trader.
Citing locals, police said that Shafiqul was sitting at his shop in Sadarpur Bazar when a group of men called him out and spoke to him. After a while, they shot him and fled the scene.
Later, locals rescued him in critical condition and admitted him to Kushtia General Hospital. There, the doctor on duty provided necessary first aid and sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Witnesses say those who called Shafiqul were seen talking to him “normally.” It seemed they were well acquainted.
“Shafiqul has been shot in his right eye, left cheek and abdomen. It seems the bullet in the abdomen has hit the blood vessels inside,” said KGH resident physician Hossain Imam.
“This is why he is bleeding abnormally. Since his condition is critical, he has been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment after receiving emergency first aid.”
ASP Mahmudul said, “The police have seized three rounds of bullets, a magazine and a motorcycle from the scene. An investigation into the incident is under way. Whoever is involved will be arrested and legal action will be taken.”
However, no information was immediately available from the police regarding the motive for the shooting.
