Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain has been seeing patients in his home area of Dinajpur during the Eid holiday.

Zahid, a physician by profession, saw patients at his ancestral home in Motihara village of Nawabganj on Sunday evening and resumed consultations from 10am on Monday.

Speaking to bdnews24.com, the minister said a large number of people had gathered outside his home seeking treatment and advice.

“From 10am, patients have been crowding in front of the house. They are standing in a long queue,” he said.

“Some have colds, some have fevers, some have cancer, while others have urological, neurological or heart-related problems. People are coming with many different illnesses.”

He said he had started seeing patients in the courtyard of his home and continued until 3am, before beginning again on Monday morning.

“I am giving them prescriptions and advising them where to go for treatment and which medical tests they may need, depending on their condition,” he said.

Zahid said he was glad to be able to provide medical services to people in the village during the holiday.

“These are simple village people. I am spending the Eid holiday here in the village. When they come for medical advice, they also speak about their other problems. I have to try to address those as well."

The minister said he had remained in Dhaka on Eid day to attend state programmes, where he exchanged greetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and accompanied him to the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

Zahid was elected as a member of parliament from Dinajpur-6 in the 11th parliamentary election with the BNP's paddy sheaf symbol. The constituency, consisting of Birampur-Nawabganj-Ghoraghat-Hakimpur, is a largely remote area. Motihara village, like much of Nawabganj Upazila, is surrounded by sal forest and its economy depends mainly on agriculture.

He is also a member of the BNP National Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, and has previously held senior positions in both the Doctors Association of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Medical Association.
