Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury has announced financial assistance of Tk 200,000 for each family of those killed and Tk 100,000 for the injured in a fire at a gas lighter factory in Keraniganj.

The minister made the announcement after visiting the factory in Kadamtali, which was gutted in the blaze.

According to a ministry statement issued at night, he also enquired about the cause of the fire and the extent of damage.

Later, he visited the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where he spent time beside injured workers and reviewed their treatment.

To determine the cause of the fire and those responsible, the minister ordered the formation of a five-member probe committee led by a joint secretary of the labour and employment ministry.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within five working days.

He also instructed the Dhaka deputy commissioner to submit a separate report on the incident.

The fire broke out at the factory in Keraniganj around 1:15pm on Saturday.

Seven units of the Fire Service brought the blaze under control after about one hour and 15 minutes, around 2:30pm.

Rescue operations were still ongoing at the site late at night.

Fire Service spokesperson Talha Bin Zasim said at around 12:15am that six bodies had been recovered and two others were rescued with injuries.

A separate five-member probe committee, led by the Fire Service director for operations and maintenance, has also been formed.

It has been given seven working days to submit its findings.
