A Jahangirnagar University student, who recently filed a rape case against a former student, has alleged that she is being subjected to online harassment and blackmail, but police have reportedly refused to record a fresh case under cyber laws.
The victim claims the accused has been circulating her private photos and conversations on social media to humiliate her.
Ashulia Police Station officers allegedly declined to register a formal case, suggesting instead that the matter be treated as a general diary (GD) or handled through a court.
Ashulia Police chief Rubel Haolader said, “Not everything warrants a case; some matters result in a case, while others are recorded as a general diary.”
"What we have said is that this requires permission to investigate. We have sent it to the court for that permission. Once the court grants it, we will begin the probe," he added.
On Feb 25, the victim filed a case at Ashulia Police Station against SM Tarikul Islam under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Tarikul, a student of the 44th batch of the Institute of Information Technology (IIT), has since had his academic certificates suspended by the university authorities.
The complainant alleges that since the case was filed, the suspect has been pressuring her and her family to withdraw the case.
She claims Tarikul called her parents via WhatsApp with threats that private photos and videos, recorded secretly, would be leaked if the case were not dropped.
On the night of Mar 5, the victim discovered a public post on a Facebook page featuring edited versions of her private photos and WhatsApp chats.
The post also reportedly included a Google Drive link containing 289 images.
The victim alleged that when she approached Ashulia Police to file a case under the Cyber Security Act, she was initially advised to file a complaint or general diary.
Attempts to reach Tarikul for comment were unsuccessful as his mobile phone remained switched off, and he did not respond to WhatsApp messages.
