Two of the 10 people severely burnt in a salt factory fire in Chattogram’s Boalkhali Upazila have died.

Chittagong Medical College Hospital Director Brig Gen Mohammed Taslim Uddin confirmed the deaths around 10:30pm on Thursday.

He told bdnews24.com, "Nurul Alam and Didarul Alam died while undergoing treatment in the ICU. The condition of the other three in the ICU is also critical."

Didarul, 32, hailed from Boalkhali Municipality, and Mohammad Nurul Alam, 45, from Patia Upazila.

Three other victims are being treated in the burns unit of the hospital while two others left the facility after primary treatment.

Ten workers were rushed to the hospital earlier in the day, after the blaze had erupted when a generator and some other machines were being repaired.

Two air conditioners went off shortly afterwards, intensifying the blaze at Confidence Salt Limited in Paschim Gomdandi in the morning, police said.

Fire brigade said the fire had already been put out when a team visited the factory around 10:10am.

Borhan Uddin, assistant general manager of the salt company, could not be reached for his for comment.
