The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has fined seven firms, including ACI Godrej and Aftab Feed Products, Tk 14.8 million for producing and marketing products without mandatory testing and quality certification.

The two companies, alongside battery maker Juezhou Industry Ltd, were fined a combined Tk 10 million during a mobile court drive in Narayanganj's Rupganj, BSTI said on Sunday.

ACI Godrej was fined Tk 4 million for producing, selling and distributing poultry and fish feed without BSTI quality and packaging registration certificates, as well as for irregularities in weights and measures.

Aftab Feed Products received a Tk 4 million fine for similar violations.

Juezhou Industry was fined Tk 2 million for making and selling lead-acid starter batteries without BSTI approval and for weight and measurement violations.

Separate mobile court drives in Dhaka's Bosila and Hazaribagh imposed another Tk 4.8 million in fines.

Aman Consumer & Toiletries and Standard Consumer & Toiletries were fined a combined Tk 3.5 million for manufacturing and marketing handwash and liquid toilet cleaners under names resembling those of other companies.

In Hazaribagh, Mithai was fined Tk 1 million for selling sweets, biscuits and Lachcha Semai, which is fine vermicelli, without BSTI certification, while Apurbo Ananda Jal Khabar was fined Tk 300,000 for producing and marketing sweets and yoghurt without approval.

ACI Godrej Agrovet Director FH Ansarey told bdnews24.com, “We have a licence from the Department of Livestock Services. They are the authorised body for issuing such licences.

“Now BSTI has said that registration from them is also required. We will soon contact the two ministries over the matter. The legal issues will then be resolved based on the decisions taken by the ministries.”

When contacted, Aftab Feed Products Chief Executive Officer Mahabobur Rahman Sarker told bdnews24.com that he was not aware of the issue.

“I do not know about it. I will look into it (on Monday) and let you know,” he said.
